Plover Cove Duathlon

A novel way to explore Hong Kong’s other side: A combination of two easy-to-moderate bicycle rides and hikes...

Having picked up our bicycles near Tai Po Market Railway Station, we cycle downstream along the Lam Tsuen River till it merges with Tolo
Harbour. Heading eastwards we first follow the northern shore of Tolo Harbour and then the contours of Plover Cove Reservoir. We pause,
briefly, at the small fishing village of Sam Mun Tsai and, later, at the Bride’s Pool Waterfalls before parking our bikes near the village of Wu
Kau Tang, so that we can explore Plover Cove Country Park on foot.

The Plover Cove Country Park in the northeastern New Territories is one of the best places in Hong Kong to feel that you have gotten away
from it all is.  The hike portion of the duathlon will take you through mountain valleys, around old fields, along  rocky shores of small inlets and
past abandonned villages.

At the half-way point of the hike, in Sam A Tsuen, we benefit from the entrepreneurship of the Hong Kong people as we enjoy a delicious lunch
at
one of the restaurants which open on week-ends only to cater to passing hikers.

Apart from the tasty food and cold drinks, we also savour the tranquility of this beautiful corner of Hong Kong. One of the few places where
jack hammers are unknown and mobile phones useless…

After lunch we follow the very colorful shoreline for a while, before heading back inland past the ruins of Ha Miu Tin and Sheung Miu Tin to
recover our bikes at Wu Kau Tang. While most of the afternoon ride will be the reverse of the morning's route, we will arrive at Tai Po Market
Station from a different angle so as to explore a little more of the suburb of Tai Po. Should the group be interested, we could visit market
streets and an old temple before returning our bicycles.
