Southern Tolo Bicycle Tour
(Saturday)
The western shore of the Shing Mun River Channel is – unquestionably – Hong Kong’s busiest bicycle path. However, our early start will allow
us a fairly smooth ride as we make our way past the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Sha Tin Park and the Sha Tin Racecourse.
Crossing the channel, we enter Ma On Shan. The paths around the new waterfront recreation area of this giant dormitory town are nice, flat
and - relatively - empty. The very short road section of this ride beyond Wu Kai Sha isn’t, but less confident riders can opt to ride on the side
walk...
Furthermore, after less than a kilometre, we leave the big road to make our way along semi-paved roads to reach the southern shores of
Three Fathoms Cove. The nice, broad, level road along its southern shoreline should give us plenty of time to enjoy the views of the floating
fish farms in the bay and the Ma On Shan and Pat Sin Leng mountain ridges beyond…
A little further ahead, we will need to pay more attention to where we are going as the path narrows considerably while also becoming rather
less straight…
Though there is more cycling to come, you could argue that the day’s challenge ends at the little café in the village of Sham Chung, as the rest
of the ride is along nice flat dedicated bicycle paths...
Virtually surrounded by the Sai Kung Country Park, this tiny hamlet has become the subject of many an article and discussions about
conservation versus development, or nature versus man’s desire for leisure activities. At Hansen’s Rides we believe that the two should go
hand-in-hand, but this could be a topic of conversation over lunch…
You see, on Saturdays, transportation schedules allow us plenty of time to enjoy the green oasis that is Sham Chung as well as the simple,
but delicious, meals served at the café.
Nevertheless, in order to avoid retracing our steps, we do have a ferry to catch… Our little old ferry chugs through Tolo Harbour to terminate
near the Chinese University from where it is but a short ride on dedicated bicycle paths along the waterfront back to the bike shop in Tai Wai.
... exploring Hong Kong's other side...
