Tai Lam By Bike
Having picked up our iron horses near Yuen Long MTR station, we make our way around this busy market town to reach its quieter suburbs.
As can be seen from the rather haphazard development of this part of Hong Kong, the concept of urban planning hasn’t quite reached Shap
Pat Heung…
Traversing what used to be a series of small villages surrounded by rice paddies the going is all flat. This changes the moment we reach the
turn off for the popular BBQ destination of Tai Tung at the edge of the Tai Lam Country Park. Here we will quickly be shifting into lower gears…
Once past the country park warden’s post, we find ourselves riding on ondulating paved forest tracks for a little while and should encounter
few, if any, vehicles. Reaching the large Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, we leave the road behind us to ride on dirt trails along its western and
southern shores. While the ride is mostly flat, there will be a number of places where we will have to carry or push the bikes – especially
towards the end of this off-road section. Back on the paved track, we cross the reservoir’s main dam which permits us a glimpse into life in a
Hong Kong prison…
Beyond the dam, our route becomes more hilly. However, the climbs are followed by exciting descents. At this point, the actual route will
depend on the group’s wishes but it might include a stop at a small watering hole for refreshments.
While we leave the country park at our point of entry, we will take a different route back to the bike shop.
