Tour de Tai Fan Kam
…or a bicycle ride along the back roads of Hong Kong’s northern New Territories…
Setting out from Tai Po Market railway station, we wind our way through the narrow streets of the old part of town to join a broad level bicycle
path along the shored up Lam Tsuen River allowing us to get used to our bikes.
Shortly afterwards, we find ourselves riding on concrete footpaths passing vegetable plots, kennels, orchards and nurseries along the
tracks of the main Hong Kong to China railway as we head for the ever expanding town of Fan Ling. Though a fairly pleasant town, Fan Ling
has little to offer a visitor, so we skirt the town along small paths through well-tended fields and a series of small villages.
We pause for refreshments at a small café near Lin Tong Mei, at the edge of the Fan Ling golf course, before continuing our exploration of
secluded northern valleys and villages. Along the way, we also pay a visit to the San Tin Barracks of the People’s Liberation Army and keep a
look out for Black-faced Spoonbills and stray water buffaloes on our way towards the historical village of Kam Tin.
We check out a number of traditional century old temples, ancestral halls, schools and interesting buildings before finishing the outing with a
well-deserved (late) lunch at an Indian restaurant in Kam Tin.

Note 1:
|
Where possible, we will ride on dedicated bicycle paths, but most of this tour will be along narrow concrete footpaths and quiet rural back roads. There will, however, be a short stretch along a fairly busy main road.
|
| |
Note 2:
|
As it is NOT possible to rent helmets, gloves and other accessories, you are invited bring your own, should you require such. You can get a small basket for your stuff, but this will make you bicycle a little front heavy.
