... exploring Hong Kong's other side...

Yuen Kam Nam Circuit
This fairly easy bicycle ride explores the more historic parts of Yuen Long and Kam Tin and even allows us to check out the
rich bird life around the Nam Sang Wai wetlands.
The first stop on our journey is Yuen Long old town; a low-rise oasis where very old houses and temples mix effortlessly
with more modern structures along narrow car free alleys. The contrasts between old and new are quite intriguing.
Next we follow a series of bicycle paths to Kam Tin and buildings that are older still. Kam Tin can trace its history back to
1103 AD, but most of the remaining old buildings and structures were built between 1685 and 1840. We will visit a number
of ancestral halls, temples and study halls and the famous Tree House.
We then break for lunch at a small Indian restaurant, before dedicating the second half of our ride to birdwatching as we
cycle on quiet back roads along the shallow Kam Tin River and into the Nam Sang Wai wetlands. The mangrove clad shores
and the - mostly - abandonned fish farms provide ideal conditions for a rich and varied bird life. Recent sightings include
Cormorants, Grey Herons, Wigeons, Teals, Northern Shovelers, White Wagtails and Black Kites.
We pause for refreshments at a store above old fish ponds before boarding Hong Kong’s most unique ferry that will greatly
shorten our trip back to Yuen Long.
Comfortable air-conditioned buses run every few minutes between Yuen Long and central Hong Kong, so you must feel free
to stay behind and explore this bustling market town...
