Monkeys, Tunnels and Reservoirs
Only 15 minutes from the bustling shopping malls and street markets of Mongkok, the Kowloon reservoirs provide a gate to
quite a different world. A world of serenity and scenic beauty. A world where birds are singing, cattle roam free and the
only hustling is that being done by monkeys.
We alight from our double-decker bus at the Shek Lek Pui Reservoir to make our way up a gently climbing road past
families of monkeys to the Shing Mun Redoubt. This is an old military installation consisting of a number of bunkers and
tunnels. Using torches, we will explore one of the shorter tunnels.
Shortly afterwards, we reach the Shing Mun Reservoir where we will stop for a picnic lunch.
After lunch, we spend another 2 hours or so circling the Shing Mun Reservoir along a nice, shaded and relatively flat path.
With a little luck we should see plenty of birds and butterflies in addition to more monkeys and we might even come across
the odd head of feral cattle in amongst the eucalyptus trees as well.
The outing ends with a minibus ride down to Tsuen Wan.
