Hansen's Family Outings
Lantau Island, Hong Kong
Lantau Island, Hong Kong
Airplanes, Stilt Houses and Dolphins

It is only a short ferry ride from Tung Chung to the small village of Sha Lo Wan on the northern coast of Lantau Island, but it
will allow us to do a little plane spotting as we sail parallel to one of Chek Lap Kok's runways.

We disembark at  Sha Lo Wan and visit the well-maintained Tin Hau Temple before continuing westwards along village
paths. Passing orchards and vegetable fields, we make our way via Sham Shek Tsuen to the idyllic bay at Sham Wat, where
we break for refreshments and a snack.

Shortly after Sham Wat, the concrete ends and we follow a dirt trail high above the Pearl River into
Tai O.

Traces of the big fire that swept through Tai O a few years ago can still be found, but many of the traditional stilt houses
have been rebuilt.  Catch a glimpse of what life was like hundreds of years ago as time seems to have slowed down here.
And as Tai O is still relatively undisturbed by the fast development elsewhere in Hong Kong it has not only been able to keep
its local culture but is also very rich from an ecological view. The precious mangrove surrounding the village is home to
many wetland animals and birds.

Before settling down for lunch, we we go on a boat ride in search of the pink coloured Chinese White Dolphin. This also
includes a tour Tai O from the waterside.

After lunch, there will be time to discover a bit more of Tai O's uniqueness, before we end the outing by taking the ferry
back to Tung Chung allowing us to appreciate our walk from a different perspective.
