Minibuses
Competing minibuses in narrow streets of Aberdeen.
PUBLIC LIGHT BUSS (PLBs) are minibuses with not more than 16 seats. Their number is fixed at a
maximum of 4,350 vehicles. Some PLBs are used on scheduled services (
Green minibuses) and
others on non-scheduled services (
Red minibuses).
GREEN minibuses (GMBs) operate on
fixed routes at fixed fares.

In December 2004, there were 72
GMB
routes on Hong Kong Island, 81 in
Kowloon and 199 in the New Territories,
employing a total of 2,673 vehicles. In the
year 2004, GMBs carried about 1,240,000
passengers daily.

You pay for your ride when boarding a
Green minibus and almost all accept the
Octopus Card.
RED minibuses are free to operate
anywhere, except where special
prohibitions apply, without control over
routes or fares.

There are 1, 677 red minibuses in
December 2004. In the year 2004, RMBs
carried about 471,000 passengers daily.

You pay for your ride when alighting a
Red
minibus and this is strictly
cash only.
Drivers can give change.

Note that
Red minibuses have a rather
poor safety record...
