Beach Bumming
(Sunday)

The Sai Kung Peninsula is renowned for its scenic beauty. Situated at the east coast of the Sai Kung Peninsula, Tai Long Wan is headed by
two magnificent beaches, Ham Tin and Tai Wan. The Hong Kong Tourist Board describes Tai Long Wan as 'the jewel in the peninsula's
crown', with 'an expansive bay with long, white sand beaches ringed by hills and headlands'.

Big words indeed, but - for once - the description is spot on. Indeed, it might even be a slight understatement!  Getting to the beaches,
however, involves a long bus ride and a beautiful walk along a well-maintained path.

Alighting at a crest in Sai Kung Country Park, we are able to enjoy the views over Long Harbour as we slowly wind our way down to the quiet
village of Chek Keng. Peeking through the windows and doors of some of the abandonned houses, we try to imagine what life might have
been like in rural Hong Kong not so long ago.

Next we climbing up the valley between Sharp Peak and Tai Mun Shan. The steady climb is rewarded by the spectacular panorama of Tai
Long Wan and its beaches. Less than 30 minutes later, you will find yourself on the sands of the middle beach, Ham Tin Wan, getting ready
for a swim...

Following the refreshing dip we enjoy a nice cooked Chinese lunch at a small café. Suitably rested, we then head over to the western beach,
Sai Wan, for a refreshment  - and perhaps another quick dip - before tackling the last incline of the day.

The walk involves only 3 small hills in total, but the last one can fee somewhat zapping.  However, it IS the last one and there will be a minibus
(or taxi) awaiting you at the top.  The bus will drop us off in the heart of Sai Kung close to re-hydration spots…
