High Island Reservoir

This hike actually starts even before we get off the bus.  The views across the High Island Reservoir during the last part of
our bus ride are superb and made even better by the fact the that the bus ride will save us quite a bit of uphill walking…

Nevertheless, after a short warm up stretch we do have a little climbing to do to conquer Sai Wan Shan.  Yet, the effort put
into this is rewarded by beautiful panoramas over Tai Long Wan, its
famed beaches and the peaks behind it.

From the pavillion at the top of Sai Wan Shan, it is a 314m drop down to the beach at Long Ke.  Facilities here are not the
greatest (read: virtually non-existent) but we have time to wait for anyone who fancies a dip at this pristine beach.  Long Ke
is also home to a well-maintained Christian centre offering counseling and support to youth in need.

From Long Ke, the path climbs rather steeply up to the edges of the High Island. Taking in the view and admiring the effort
gone into the construction of it, we cross the reservoir’s East Dam and follow a restricted road for a little while, before
dropping down to Pak Lap.  We pass the little inn here and then head back up a small hill to fully enjoy the beauty of this
secluded bay before continuing to our destination, the fishing villages of Tung Ya, Pak Ya and Sha Kiu Tau.

Fresh fish and seafood is on the menu here and the best way to leave this tranquil spot is by speedboat – a trip that will take
you across Rocky Harbour and Port Shelter to Sai Kung, where we get on a bus to the city.
