High Junk Peak
Leaving the densely populated Kowloon neighbourhood of Choi Hung, our trusty old air-conditioned double-decker KMB bus takes us on a
round-about trip along Clearwater Bay Road.
We alight at a crest to follow a dirt trail down the length of the Clearwater Bay Peninsula. As we gradually gain altitude, we first enjoy the
views over Port Shelter towards Sai Kung and numerous islands. Later, as we walk along the ridge, we look across Junk Bay towards the
new town of Tseung Kwan O and, finally, Hong Kong Island comes into view. We will also be looking down at the white sandy beaches of
Clearwater Bay and out towards the Ninepin Islands...
Towards the end of the trail we have to climb Tin Ha Shan. The climb is fairly steep, but the views from the windswept top over the island of
Tung Lung Chau and the eastern entrance to Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour are brilliant and well worth that final effort. Descending a long
flight of stairs, we visit Tei Tong Shui's old Tin Hau temple, before following the road to the small fishing hamlet of Po Toi O. We suggest
ending the outing here with a lunch at one of the waterfront seafood restaurants.
