The Big Buddha and Keung Shan
Set amid spectacular mountain scenery, the Po Lin Monastery shares the Ngong Ping Plateau with the famous Big Buddha, the world's
largest, seated, outdoor, bronze Buddha statue. Following an exciting ride on the new Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car, you are invited to walk up
the 268 steps for a closer look at the 26-metre-high, 202-tonne wonder, before we start today’s hike which will take us through woodland and
across a highland plateau before ending in a quaint old fishing village.
Our walk starts with a relatively gentle descent through woodland high above the upper reaches of the impressive Shek Pik Reservoir.
Enjoying views over the Soko Islands and the South China Sea, we take on the twin peaks of Kwun Yam Shan and Keung Shan before
reaching the highland plateau at Man Cheung Po. This is then followed by a peek at an absolutely exquisite traditional Chinese mansion.
From here the trail winds itself down to the disused saltpans at Nam Chung and on to the popular fishing village of Tai O.
Traces of the big fire that swept through Tai O a couple of years ago can still be found, but many of the traditional stilt houses have been
rebuilt and you are able to catch a glimpse of what life in Hong Kong used to be like. And as Tai O is still relatively undisturbed by modern
development, it has not only been able to keep its local culture but is also very rich from an ecological view. The precious mangrove
surrounding the village is home to many wetland animals and birds.
Time permitting, we will finish our day by inspecting the mangrove and Tai O from the waterside - and even go a little out to sea to try to catch
a glimpse of the endangered Chinese White Dolphin (which actually is pink).
