Lantau South Country Park
Having reached Lantau Island in the air-conditioned comfort of a fast ferry, we begin this moderate hike by following nice level concrete paths
through Mui Wo to the foothills of the rather impressive mountain range visible from the pier. Along the way, we pass a Sung Dynasty watch
tower and a few more modern neighbourhoods…
Our route next follows gently climbing boulder and dirt paths tracking the contours of the lower slopes of Sunset Peak in the Lantau South
Country Park. At first, our ascent is nicely shaded, but soon we are able to enjoy spectacular views over southern Lantau, Pui O, the Chi Ma
Wan Peninsula and the islands beyond.
We will enjoy an extended snack break at the highest point of the day, near Pak Kung Au, before the rather steep descent through newly
planted woodlands to the beach at Tong Fuk. In the last 10 years, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has planted more
than 7.7 million trees within the Hong Kong Country Parks.
As we hit South Lantau Road, you may choose to flag down a passing bus and go home. However, you may also decide to continue the hike
for another 3 kilometres along the sandy shores of Cheung Sha Bay to finish the outing with a - slightly late - al-fresco lunch on the beach at
Lower Cheung Sha Village.
Indeed, as buses leave Cheung Sha regularly for the pier back in Mui Wo, there is also the option to finish the day with a swim at this wide life-
guard supervised sandy beach where changing room facilities have recently been renovated…
