This afternoon hike will explore the western part of the Sai Kung Country Park and promises a full day of fresh air. From the park entrance at Pak Tam Chung, we walk up an old stone path passing plantations, vegetable fields, a drug treatment centre and an old village, to reach a gap in what is known as the Yung Pak Corridor.
From here it is down hill through dense vegetation and across a few streams to Yung Shue O at Three Fathoms Cove. Beyond the village we follow the mangrove clad shore on a relatively level concrete path while looking out at the fish farms here and across to Ma On Shan.
We stop to enjoy a snack at the idyllic hamlet of Sham Chung while contemplating the progress of the unique leisure development planned for this tranquil corner of Hong Kong. As we pass them, we notice that many of the original houses could actually be made quite habitable with a good airing and a bit of paint…
We keep a discreet eye on the watch to ensure that we have time for both climbing She Shek Au and ensuring the acquisition in Lai Chi Chong of provisions necessary to fulfill re-hydration requirements on the ferry ride which will take us into the sunset… (and to the pier at Ma Liu Shui by about 6:45pm.)
Picnic or light meal at a small restaurant in Sham Chung - not included. Feel free to bring a lunch box... Refreshments at Lai Chi Cheong - not included.
