Lantau Island, Hong Kong
Stilt Houses, Airplanes and Dolphins

Leaving Tung Chung new town we will pass through the remains of an old fishing hamlet and pay a visit to the traditional Hau Wong Temple, a
lovely tiered-roof structure built in the 18th century.

Then we will join the old village footpaths along Lantau Island's northern coast which joins together the small villages of San Tau, Sha Lo
Wan, Sham Shek Tsuen and Sham Wat. We will discover whether the Chek Lap Kok airport has made any impact on these remote hamlets
while we take in the beautiful scenery and succumb to a little plane spotting.

We make a brief snack and refreshment stop at Sham Wat bay shortly after which the concrete ends and we follow a dirt trail into
Tai O.

Traces of the big fire that swept through Tai O a few years ago can still be found, but many of the traditional stilt houses have been rebuilt.
Catch a glimpse of what life was like hundreds of years ago as time seems to have slowed down here.  And as Tai O is still relatively
undisturbed by the fast development elsewhere in Hong Kong it has not only been able to keep its local culture but is also very rich from an
ecological view. The precious mangrove surrounding the village is home to many wetland animals and birds.

After a quick lunch, we will go on a boat ride in search of the pink coloured Chinese White Dolphin. This also includes a tour Tai O from the
waterside.

We end our journey by taking the ferry back to Tung Chung. This will allow us to appreciate our hike from a different perspective.
