Tai Lam Country Park
(Northwards)
Only a Hong Kong hike would start by a mile-long walk through an air-conditioned footbridge, but that’s how we start today’s
walk in Tsuen Wan. As if to make up for this luxurious start, the walk soon turns somewhat strenuous as we take on our
only major climb of the day. The walk up the exposed and boulder strewn southern slope of Shek Lung Kung is steep, but it
lasts for a mile only and the views over the Rambler Channel, Tsing Yi and the Tsing Ma & Ting Kau bridges are phenomenal
and worth the elevated heart beat... On really clear days even Hong Kong and Lamma islands are visible.
At the top of the hill, we turn our back on the big city below and descend into the woodlands of the Tai Lam Country Park.
Soon, the sounds of jackhammers, fire trucks and bus brakes are replaced by bird song and the throaty quack of frogs.
Adding to the pleasure is the fact that most of the walk from now on is down hill.
Later we try to stay out of the way of paint-ball warriors as we make our way past the old mining village of Tin Fu Tsai to the
Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. Here, again, the scenery changes a little as we make our way up a narrow gully before suddenly
finding ourselves amongst abandoned rice fields on the outskirts of Yuen Long.
We end our walk with a well-deserved rehydration-cum-lunch stop at one of Nam Hang Pai’s “mahjong palaces” before we
get on the bus back to the city via a quick visit to Yuen Long.
... exploring Hong Kong's other side...
