Tai Lam Country Park
(Southeastwards)
Imagine a Hong Kong place free of buildings, traffic, pollution and crowds…
Imagine a green oasis full of tall trees, bamboo groves and lily ponds...
Imagine quiet dirt and stone paths crisscrossed by clear streams…
Imagine a world full of flittering butterflies, hovering dragonflies and roaming cattle…
Then, imagine yourself there…
Now stop imagining. Join this hike through the Tai Lam Country Park and discover that place for yourself…
We enter the country park just outside the ever-expanding dormitory town of Yuen Long by following a small steam towards its source.
Partially lined by thick patches of bamboo, our route next winds its way through some of Hong Kong's oldest and densest woodland. All the
same, the occasional clearing will allow us glimpses of the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, Hong Kong's largest valley reservoir, and perhaps a
small waterfall or two...
Later, we pause at an old farm house for refreshments. Located in a well-protected large clearing full of flowers and fruit trees, the farm
hosts an amazing number of butterflies and dragonflies. Herds of feral cattle are also frequent visitors...
Suitably chilled, we finish our green escape by descending through a series of gorges to the bus stop at Sham Tseng.
Note: You have the option to finish the day with a (late) lunch at one of Sham Tseng’s famous roasted goose restaurants.
