Shing Mun Country Park A "Stepless" Hike
Just 15 minutes from the grimy industrial suburb of Tsuen Wan lies a serene green oasis. Wedged in between Hong Kong's highest mountain, Tai Mo Shan, and the appropriately named Needle and Grassy Hills, the Shing Mun Reservoir and surrounding country park constitute a haven of oxygen and tranquility..
This is a place where you are pretty much guaranteed to encounter families of hustling monkeys, herds of feral cattle and an extensive selection of Hong Kong's 240 species of butterflies. Yet, there are many other animals waiting to be spotted in the dense woodlands ad over the water. Tall trees line most of the walk but we will, occasionally, emerge into the open to enjoy great panoramas, most of which will be devoid of buildings. Indeed, there will be times when you could be forgiven for believing that you had been secretly transported to another country. Only the odd group of merry septuagenarian hikers with ill-tuned transistor radios might remind you of where you really are...
Numerous paths and tracks criss-cross the Shing Mun Country Park and we have combined several of these into a long "stepless" hike. While there might not be any stairs to overcome, this is by no means a walk on the flat. There will be enough sweat-inducing climbs and subsequent descents to satisfy most cardio-junkies as we make our way from the main dam of the reservoir through the woods towards the northern suburb of Tai Po...
While we suggest that you bring a lunch box, you could also opt to finish the outing with a late cooked lunch in Tai Po.
