Shing Tolo Waterfront - Western Route
A "Stepless" Hike

Following a ride on the iconic Star Ferry, this long waterfront walk starts at the clock tower in Tsim Sha Tsui. Enjoying views over Hong
Kong's spectacular skyline, we make our way along the
Avenue of Stars to the train station at Hung Hom.

Here we board the East Rail train for the short ride to Tai Wai, where we make brief visits to the grand Che Kung Temple, the impressive
Tsang Tai Uk compound and a small, but busy, Buddhist temple.

The Che Kung Festival, held on the third day of the Chinese New Year, sees thousands of worshippers gathering at the temple to pray for good
fortune. People will line up to light their ceremonial tributes and turn a bronze prayer-wheel in a clockwise direction to avert bad luck and
hope for a "good-turn" of fortune in the coming year. On normal week days, however, crowds should be minimal, so we can enjoy our visit.

The Tsang Tai Uk compound was built more than 160 years ago by a local businessman to accommodate his
descendants.

Our walk starts in earnest as we leave Tsang Tai Uk to make our way northwards along the shores of the Shing Mun River Channel. We pass
the Heritage Museum, a rowing stadium and the Sha Tin Racecourse before reaching Tolo Harbour at the Ma Liu Shui ferry pier. Stopping
along the way to enjoy a picnic lunch, we follow the water’s edge all the way to the wonderful Tai Po Waterfront Park, where grass can be
played on and coffee can be enjoyed.

From the park, it is just a short walk along the Lam Tsuen River to the railway station at Tai Po Market and the train back to the city.
