Yes, even in Hong Kong, it really IS possible to go for a nice long walk in the countryside without having to climb any steps...
This walk through the serene Tai Lam Country Park starts in the shade of Hong Kong’s highest peak, Tai Mo Shan, and ends at Tsing Lung Tau by the Ma Wan Channel.
Following gently sloping paved forest tracks amidst shady acacia and eucalyptus trees, we start the day by climbing Lin Fa Shan. En route we are treated to spectacular views of mountains and the city, before our track starts a long and winding descent through the quiet deep woodlands of the country park. The usual Hong Kong sound-track of drilling jackhammers, wailing fire trucks and screeching bus brakes is replaced by singing birds, braying cattle and babbling brooks. Adding to the pleasure is the potential of encounters with any number of interesting wildlife.
There will be plenty of opportunities for rests along this route, but the main pause will be our lunch break in a small hidden valley, home to a gem of a watering hole. The kind of place that you would actually prefer to keep to yourself, it is the perfect location for us to enjoy our lunch box while benefitting from the chance to acquire refreshments…
After lunch, we get back onto our gently undulating forest track before completing the walk with a relatively steep downhill approach to the ever growing suburb of Tsing Lung Tau. With a little luck, we should have time for a cold drink near the water before hopping on the direct bus to Central.
Snack breaks en route. Refreshment and lunch stop at Tsing Fai Tong (10 km) - bring lunch box.
Note:
Should the situation so require, then it is possible to cut short the walk at Tsing Fai Tong. However, this involves tackling a rather long flight of stairs down to the busstop in Sham Tseng.
