It is a little known fact and a big surprise to most arrivals, but Hong Kong is truly a great place to go hiking and, even, cycling.

Although Hong Kong is widely regarded as one of the world's great cities, about 75% of its 1,104 square kilometres of land is countryside that
is, generally, too steep or too mountainous to be developed and so has remained in a relatively wild state. Additionally, no other territory in the
world has so much land, almost 40% of its total area, committed to conservation and recreation on the very edge of a metropolis.

Scenically, Hong Kong has a great deal to offer the intrepid hiker and cyclist - a landscape rising from
sandy beaches and rocky foreshores
heights of almost 1 000 metres. You will find woodlands and mountain ranges covered by open grassland, worldwide known wetlands and
a general variety of scenic vistas rarely, if ever, matched in so small a territorial unit - including a few
remote islands.

Add to this, an amazing fauna and flora, with hundreds of butterfly and dragonfly species, exotic reptiles, a rich bird life as well as several
unique mammals, such as dolphins, muntjacs, pangolins and wild boars.

Finally, hiking and cycling in Hong Kong is also a trip back in time.... Some of the trails have been used
for more than 400 years and take the
curious explorer to various spots of
historical interest, from ancient kilns to World War II fortifications and past ancient villages and farmland.
