It is a little known fact and a big surprise to most visitors, but Hong Kong is truly a great place to go hiking.
Although Hong Kong is widely regarded as one of the world's great cities, about 75% of its 1,092 square kilometres of land is countryside that is generally too steep and mountainous to be developed and so has remained in a relatively wild state and no other territory in the world has so much land, almost 40% of its total area, committed to conservation and recreation on the very edge of a metropolis.
Scenically, Hong Kong has a great deal to offer the intrepid hiker and cyclist - a landscape rising from sandy beaches and rocky foreshores to heights of almost 1 000 metres. You will find woodlands and mountain ranges covered by open grassland, worldwide known wetlands and a general variety of scenic vistas rarely, if ever, matched in so small a territorial unit - including a few remote islands.
Add to this, an amazing fauna and flora, with hundreds of butterfly and dragonfly species, exotic reptiles, a rich bird life as well as several unique mammals, such as dolphins, muntjacs, pangolins and wild boars.
